For this interview I chose to talk to my Grandma-Age 75 and Grandpa-Age 79 What time do you wake up every day?
This time of the year she averages 9 on weekends and weekdays. She wakes up earlier in summer so she can walk before it gets too hot outside.
Do you eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day?
My Grandpa does, but my Grandma won’t always. If she has a lunch date (1 or 2 times a week) then she only drinks decaf coffee in morning and doesn't eat anything. If she doesn’t have a lunch date she will eat breakfast after her morning walk, eat a light lunch, and then dinner.
They try to eat healthy-mostly chicken and fish, baked sweet potatoes, and always a salad. They occasionally eat junk food as a snack and 2 or 3 times a week they go out. However they try to make good choices when they go out.
Why do you try to be healthy?
It feels so much better to be healthy and they see so many friends who get sick and have problems. Because of this, they try to do what they can to make sure that they don’t get sick.
How often do you exercise?
Grandma walks 5 times a week for an hour or more. Grandpa plays tennis everyday at 9am.
What is your daily schedule like?
My Grandma gets up, walks, eats breakfast while doing a Sudoku puzzle, does some chores around the house, showers, get dressed, sometimes run errands in afternoon, sometimes meet up with friends and “schleps” around, eats dinner usually by 5:30 during the week, goes to some activities, comes home, has a snack, watches television or reads and is in bed by 11.
What do you enjoy doing socially?
Grandpa- he plays pinochle Monday night, plays Bridge Tuesday, and Wednesday plays poker.
Grandma- she plays canasta Monday, she plays mahjongg on Tuesday, and Wednesday she plays mahjongg all day. Sometimes the games go until 10pm. She is also a co-chair member of the neighborhood.
On the weekends they go to casual dinner and a movie with friends, play cards with friends, or go to the theater in Philadelphia or New York. Occasionally there is a party or wedding etc that they attend.
What made you choose your living community?
It was time for a change and they wanted to downsize. They got their own little house in a 55 and older community. It was a nice opportunity to meet more and new people at their age. The Community also cuts their lawn and shovels for them.

No. They don’t text at all. They have cell phones and a computer and a kindle and would love an IPad but they aren’t obsessed with using it all. They do however pay bills on computer. Even at their age they know how to use modern technology.
After speaking to both a high schooler and senior citizen I found many similarities and things most would not have expected. For example both my brother and grandparents participate in a lot of activities, they both know how to use electronics, and they both have stressors in life. However, many wouldn't always realize the how busy senior citizens can be. They may have more of a social life than my little brother because he is always busy with work and school. They have more time to go out and enjoy the rest of their lives.
My project focuses on health and what I noticed in these interviews is that a younger person like my brother thinks that he is going to eat the way he wants because he still can. He isn't sick and has the metabolism to do it, so he will enjoy it while he can.My grandparents see it the other way. Now is the time to be healthy because they want to be around for as long as they can. They see what happens to their elderly friends and they want to prevent that from happening to them.
I think it is important to note that no matter what age you are, you can find similarities in yourself to others.
